How to Perfect Your Elevator Pitch
How to craft consistent, compelling and memorable messaging
Ever heard of “the elevator pitch”? The age-old idea that if you were in an elevator with a VIP, you’d be able to effectively communicate what’s compelling about your company, product or idea before you reach your destination.
It might be an exaggeration, but in a high-pressure moment? It’s harder than it seems. Here are a few tips for getting it right from the TJC team:
Consider your audience: Are you speaking to a potential customer, retail partner, investor or employee? Think about what motivates them and tailor your message accordingly.
Land on a few key words: What are the few key words that perfectly express your brand? No matter who you’re talking to or how you’re phrasing it, be sure to utilize these words to ensure consistent messaging across all audiences.
Skip the jargon: Imagine you’re explaining what you do to your great-aunt at a family reunion. Skip acronyms and technical terminology in favor of being as straightforward as possible.
Keep it simple: Even if you’re not on an elevator, the average human attention span is 8-10 seconds. If you’re taking one, two or even five minutes to explain what you do and why it’s important, you may have already lost your audience.
